The second Dark Elf conflict was a series of events that happened in 2013 as a result of the Convergence.

Conflicts[edit | edit source]

Reawakening of the Dark Elves[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Thor: The Dark World.

During the Convergence, a portal on Earth had been opened up. Jane Foster, while studying the portal, accidentally warped herself to the location of the Aether, reawakening the Dark Elves. The leader of the Dark Elves, Malekith, was able to track the signal of the Aether to Asgard, where Foster was being kept.

Invasion of Asgard[edit | edit source]

The Dark Elves staged an invasion on Asgard upon discovering that the Aether was located there; Malekith had transformed Algrim the Strong into a Kursed and had him release various prisoners from the Asgardian dungeons. While Algrim was releasing prisoners, Malekith would invade Asgard.

Sensing the presence of the Dark Elves, Heimdall attempted to hold them back with a forcefield, to no avail. On Asgard, Malekith located Foster to Odin's chambers. Attempting to hold the Dark Elves back, Frigga protected Foster; Frigga was eventually slain by Algrim. In a fit of rage, Thor attacked Malekith, forcing the Dark Elves to retreat.

Second Battle of Svartalfheim[edit | edit source]

Determined to avenge Frigga's death, Thor disobeyed Odin's orders to avoid conflict with the Dark Elves and enlisted the help of the Warriors Three and Heimdall in taking Loki and Foster to Svartalfheim. Upon arriving in Svartalfheim, the Dark Elves sought to extract the Aether from Foster once again.

On Svartalfheim, Thor and Loki battled with the Dark Elves. During the battle, Loki grabbed a black hole grenade and managed to kill Algrim. Seizing an opportunity, Loki pretended to be dead on Svartalfheim.

Battle of Greenwich[edit | edit source]

Foster and Thor returned to London, where they met up with Darcy Lewis, Erik Selvig, and Ian Boothby. The group theorized that Malekith intended to unleash the Aether once again, and located him in Greenwich. Thor battled with Malekith in Greenwich, and, upon finding Malekith's ship, Selvig teleported the ship to Malekith's location, killing him.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

In the aftermath of the second Battle of Svartalfheim, Loki stranded Odin in Norway and took the throne for himself.

Deeming the Aether to be too powerful to keep on Asgard, the Asgardians entrusted the Collector with the Aether. Years later, Thanos would travel to Knowhere and retrieve the Aether for himself.
