Ragnarok was the prophesied destruction of Asgard and its people. The prophecy came true in 2017, when the death of Odin released Hela, thereby causing Hela to become too powerful. Upon realizing this, Thor requested that Loki cause Ragnarok by summoning Surtur, who proceeded to destroy Asgard.

The remaining Asgardians attempted to flee to Earth; Thanos intercepted their ship, the Statesman, and massacred half of the Asgardians on the ship. The Asgardians eventually settled in Tønsberg, Norway, creating New Asgard.

History

Ragnarok was prophesied thousands of years ago as the eventual destruction of Asgard and its people. Odin, the third king of Asgard, attempted to stop Ragnarok by fighting the Fire Demon Surtur, who was set to bring about Ragnarök, and banishing him to Muspelheim and sealing the Eternal Flame in Odin's vault.

Having reoccurring vivid dreams of Surtur laying waste to Asgard, Thor traveled to Muspelheim, where he was imprisoned by Surtur. Thor escaped from Muspelheim and brought Surtur's crown with him, storing it in Odin's vault.

In Thor's absence from Asgard, Thor's adopted brother, Loki, had managed to ascend to the throne of king of Asgard and left Odin to die on Tønsberg. Hela, who was being imprisoned on Hel using the Odinforce, was subsequently released. Thor and Loki, who witnessed Odin's death, attempted to fight with Hela; Hela destroyed Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, and left the two stranded on Sakaar. Arriving on the Bifrost Bridge, Hela proceeded to kill Volstagg and Fandral, taking Skurge as her right-hand man.

On Asgard, Hela assumed the throne of queen of Asgard. Hela was confronted by the Einherjar, led by Hogun.
