Surtur was the lord of Muspelheim and the initiator of Ragnarok and the destruction of Asgard.
Thousands of years ago, Surtur was defeated by Odin, who took his source of power, the Eternal Flame, back to Asgard with him. Following the second Dark Elf conflict, Thor traveled to Muspelheim in search of Surtur; Thor escaped Muspelheim with Surtur's crown. Thor later tasked Loki with using the Eternal Flame to unleash Surtur upon Asgard, destroying it and Hela in the process.
