Hel is a region of Niflheim.

Thousands of years ago, Odin banished Hela, his first-born, to Hel, following her failed attempt to seize control of the throne. Hela attempted to escape and was met by the Valkyrie; Hela eliminated all of the Valkyrie with the exception of Brunnhilde. The Valkyrie's failure resulted in Odin coming down to Hel, who defeated Hela.
In 2017, following Odin's death and the dissolution of the Odinforce, Hela was able to escape from Hel.
