The battle of New York was a conflict that took place as part of the Chitauri invasion of New York.

Background[edit | edit source]

Exiled from Asgard, Loki arrived in the Sanctuary and encountered Thanos and The Other. Thanos agreed to let Loki rule Earth if Loki, in exchange, obtained the Tesseract for him. Loki agreed and stole the Tesseract from Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S..

After Loki's attack on the Helicarrier, Tony Stark realized that Loki looked to open a wormhole at Stark Tower.

The Battle[edit | edit source]

The beginning[edit | edit source]

Stark arrived at Stark Tower and, after bantering with Stark, Loki pushed Stark off of Stark Tower. Using the Mark VII's retrieval functionality, Stark was able to survive.

Unable to stop Erik Selvig's wormhole opening device, Stark flew towards the wormhole and countered incoming Chitauri. The Chitauri proceeded to mercilessly rain fire upon New York as Loki watched in pleasure. Thor, Loki's brother, confronted Loki, and the two battled.

As the violence raged on, the New York City Police Department was sent to help contain the damage. Black Widow and Hawkeye, meanwhile, took to clearing out the Chitauri using a Quinjet. The two attempted to help Thor fight Loki; Loki used his scepter to knock out one of the turbines on the Quinjet.

Becoming a team[edit | edit source]

Eventually, a Leviathan was sent into the battlefield. Captain America looked in bewilderment as Stark requested for Bruce Banner.

On Stark Tower, Thor offered to stop the battle with Loki, which Loki used to his advantage, stabbing Thor. Thor bounced back, defeating Loki.

On the ground, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Captain America looked to hold off the Chitauri and save trapped civilians. Captain America instructed two officers to get people off the streets. As Banner arrived, Stark led a Leviathan to Banner. Banner defeated the Leviathan.

Captain America directed the Avengers to contain the damage; Hawkeye was directed to serve as lookout, Stark was directed to secure the perimeter, Thor was directed to bottleneck the portal, and him and Black Widow were directed to stay on the ground. As the Avengers fought, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the World Security Council took notice of the battle.

Nuclear winter[edit | edit source]

Black Widow mounted a Chitauri chariot and took to Stark Tower, where Selvig was located. Selvig explained to her that Loki's scepter could potentially shut down the machine.

As the Chitauri weakened the Avengers, Nick Fury overrode the World Security Council's plan to detonate Manhattan with a nuclear bomb. The World Security Council went ahead with the plan anyway; Fury instructed Stark to stop the missile. Facing no other option, Stark took the missile and headed it straight towards the Chitauri mothership. Stark fell back down to Earth as the portal closed.

Following the battle, the Avengers would eat at Shawarma Palace. Loki was sent back to Asgard, although not without confrontation, as Alexander Pierce requested that Loki, the Tesseract, and Loki's scepter be handed over to the government.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The Battle of New York had long lasting effects on the world. The battle was among the battles, including the Battle at the Triskelion, the Battle of Sokovia, and the Attack on the IFID Headquarters, that ultimately resulted in the ratification of the Sokovia Accords.

Weapons from the battle were later traded on the black market. Notably, Item 47 was used by Benjamin Pollack and Claire Weiss to rob various banks. T. Vanchat also obtained a Chitauri neural link and a Chitauri helmet containing a virus was responsible for three deaths in Wrigley, Pennsylvania.

The battle caused Stark to develop PTSD, and he created the Iron Legion.

Various memorials were created after the Battle of New York, including one in Pershing Square and one in Grand Central Station.

Victims[edit | edit source]

The battle was reported to have caused 74 civilian deaths and an unknown number of deaths from New York City Police Department officers and National Guard soldiers. Among the victims were Derek Bishop, Audrey Eastman's mother and Sunjina Nadeer.

Cleanup operations[edit | edit source]

The battle cost $160 billion to repair. Among the companies looking to repair the damage was Union Allied Construction, a front for Wilson Fisk's illegitimate operations.

Contracted by the New York government, Bestman Salvage, led by Adrian Toomes, was sent to respond to the Battle of New York. However, the United States Department of Damage Control stepped in. Toomes and his crew later turned to a life of crime using the Chitauri weapons from the battle.
