The Infinity War was a campaign by Thanos to eliminate half of all life in the universe. Thanos sought to collect all six Infinity Stones, and successfully did so, culminating in the Snap.

Prior to 2018, Thanos had eliminated half of all life on Zen-Whoberi. Facing limited resources to be able to carry out a universe-wide mass genocide, Thanos began a search for the Infinity Stones, six gems capable of eliminating half of all life in the universe. Thanos entrusted Loki with the Scepter and an army of Chitauri and allow him to rule Earth; in exchange, Loki would give Thanos the Space Stone. Loki was unsuccessful in his efforts to obtain the Space Stone. Thanos would strike a similar deal with Ronan the Accuser and Xandar to retrieve the Power Stone. After Ronan's failure in retrieving the Power Stone, Thanos would massacre the dwarves on Nidavellir to forge the Infinity Gauntlet, capable of holding the Infinity Stones.

Finding the efforts of Loki and Ronan to be unsatisfactory, Thanos sought out to retrieve the Infinity Stones himself, beginning with the Power Stone; Thanos would massacre half of the Xandarians on Xandar to retrieve the Power Stone. Following Ragnarok and the mass exodus of the Asgardians onto the Statesman, Thanos would intercept the Statesman, eliminating half of the Asgardians aboard it, including Heimdall and Loki, and taking the Space Stone for himself.

With the Power Stone and Space Stone, Thanos tasked Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian with going to Greenwich Village to retrieve the Time Stone. Hours later, Thanos would task Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight with finding Vision and retrieving the embedded Mind Stone within his forehead.[notes 1] The Black Order was unsuccessful in retrieving both the Time Stone and the Mind Stone.

Plagued with failures, Thanos traveled to Knowhere in search of the Reality Stone, and successfully obtained the Reality Stone from the Collector. Knowing the Guardians of the Galaxy would find Thanos on Knowhere, Thanos used the Reality Stone to trick Gamora, Thanos' daughter and a Zehoberei from Zen-Whoberi, into believing that Thanos was vulnerable. Thanos then captured Gamora and tortured Nebula, Gamora's non-biological sister, into giving up the location of the Soul Stone. Thanos then sacrificed Gamora to retrieve the Soul Stone.

Thanos, following his retrieval of the Soul Stone, headed to Titan. Thanos was met by the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy, joined by Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange, who had fought against Maw and Obsidian in Greenwich Village. Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy battled against Thanos, culminating into Strange giving up the Time Stone to Thanos.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Thanos had sent the Black Order and all of the Outriders to Wakanda, where Shuri worked to extract the Mind Stone from Vision's forehead in an attempt to destroy it. Knowing that the Outriders were going to flank, Black Panther ordered a section of the forcefield to be opened, unleashing the Outriders upon Wakanda. The Wakandan Royal Guard and the tribes of Wakanda, assisted by Captain America, Black Panther, Bruce Banner (donning Hulkbuster armor), Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch, fought against the Outriders and the Black Order. Thor, with Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot, later joined the battle.

Thanos, now with the Time Stone, arrived on Wakanda, and easily outmatched the Avengers on Earth. Vision, who had been taken into the outskirts of Golden City, asked for Scarlet Witch to destroy the Mind Stone. Scarlet Witch reluctantly did, much to Thanos' chagrin. Thanos, in turn, reversed time and retrieved the Mind Stone himself.

With all six Infinity Stones, Thanos was capable of eliminating half of all life in the universe. Suddenly, Thor, armed with Stormbreaker, arrived from the sky and stabbed Thanos in the chest. Thanos, pretending to be seriously injured, told Thor that he "should have gone for the head". Thanos snapped his fingers and disappeared through a portal, enacting the Snap. In an instant, half of all life in the universe ceased to exist and disintegrated into dust.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. ^ The time difference between Edinburgh and New York does not suggest that Thanos tasked Maw and Obsidian at the same time as Glaive and Midnight. The reason for this time discrepancy is unknown. It is entirely possible that Glaive and Midnight were tasked at the same time as Maw and Obsidian, but had difficulty in locating Vision.
