The Tesseract was a cube-shaped containment vessel for the Space Stone. The Space Stone remained inside of the Tesseract until the Tesseract was crushed by Thanos in 2018.
The Tesseract is theorized to be an infinite power source, and it emits a low amount of gamma radiation. It is also able to determine the worthiness of its wielder; Red Skull, who had stolen the Tesseract from Norway, was teleported to Vormir when he touched the Tesseract. Using the Tesseract, Loki was able to open wormholes in various places throughout the universe.
