James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a World War II veteran and the real identity of the Winter Soldier. An officer of the 107th Infantry Regiment, Barnes' unit was captured by Hydra in 1943. Barnes was experimented on by Arnim Zola, who gave Barnes an experimental version of the Super Soldier Serum.

Barnes was a life-long friend of Steve Rogers, and the two fought side-by-side until Barnes was captured by the Soviet Union and Hydra. Barnes was given a prosthetic arm and was brainwashed into performing various assassination missions for Hydra.

In 2014, Barnes was tasked with helping launch Project Insight by Alexander Pierce. In the wake of the Battle at the Triskelion, Barnes realized that he was being brainwashed by Hydra, and moved to Bucharest. Barnes was framed by Helmut Zemo for the bombing of the Vienna International Centre, beginning the Avengers Civil War. As part of the Avengers Civil War, Barnes was enlisted by Rogers to fight for him. Upon arriving at the Hydra Siberian Facility, Barnes fought with Tony Stark, who sought revenge for the assassination of Howard and Maria Stark.

In the wake of the Battle at the Hydra Siberian Facility, Barnes was granted amnesty in Wakanda. There, he took the mantle of White Wolf. Barnes was among those who battled in the Battle of Wakanda and was a victim of the Snap. Barnes was subsequently resurrected in 2023.

In the years that followed, Barnes sought to clear his name and forget his past. Following John Walker's attempts to be the next Captain America, Barnes fought against Walker and the Flag Smashers alongside Sam Wilson, a friend of Roger's.
