Arnim Zola was a Swiss scientist and Hydra operative. Zola worked under the Sturmabteilung, the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party, until 1934, when he was recruited by Johann Schmidt to serve Hydra.
During World War II, Zola studied the Tesseract extensively, until 1945, when he was captured by Captain America and the Howling Commandos. As part of Operation Paperclip, Zola was recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D., although used his position to rebuild Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D., an operation that would come to be known as the Hydra Uprising. Although Zola received a terminal diagnosis in 1972 and died, his mind was saved on a computer system at Camp Lehigh.
