The assassination of Howard and Maria Stark was a conflict between the Winter Soldier and Howard and Maria Stark. On the night of December 16, 1991, while Howard and Maria were en route to the Pentagon, the Winter Soldier was tasked with eliminating the two and stealing a briefcase containing a recreated version of the Super Soldier Serum.
As part of Hydra's plan to rebuild, Hydra sought to create an army of sleeper agents capable of toppling governments. Hydra tasked Vasily Karpov, a colonel for the Russian Armed Forces, with obtaining Howard Stark's recreated Super Soldier Serum. Karpov then tasked the Winter Soldier with retrieving the serum and leaving no witnesses behind. The Winter Soldier successfully completed the mission, crushing Howard's skull and strangling Maria.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Using the stolen serum, Hydra formed the Winter Soldier Program. The program was a failure, and Hydra was forced to cryogenically freeze the test subjects in a facility in Siberia.
The death of Howard and Maria Stark influenced Tony Stark, who was raised by Edwin Jarvis. Obadiah Stane became the interim CEO of Stark Industries in the wake of Howard's death.
Following the assassination, a Wakandan War Dog stationed in New York informed King T'Chaka of suspected foul play.
Footage of the assassination was obtained by Helmut Zemo, who used the footage to divide Tony Stark and Captain America.
