The Time Variance Authority (TVA) is an organization tasked with preserving the Sacred Timeline.

History[edit | edit source]

Founding[edit | edit source]

The Time Variance Authority was created by a variant of Nathaniel Richards in the 31st century, who discovered that there were multiple alternate universes coexisting with his. The Variants of He Who Remains shared their knowledge between their different universes. However, the existence of more nefarious variants, such as Kang the Conqueror, posed a risk to the Variants' mission, resulting in the Multiversal War and the annihilation of the culture of the various Variants. He Who Remains himself eventually discovered a creature known as Alioth capable of consuming time and space. Richards weaponized Alioth, ending the Multiversal War and preserving the Sacred Timeline.

Richards eventually created the Time Variance Authority as a means to an end to preserve the Sacred Timeline. As part of ensuring that the timeline was preserved, Richards created propaganda for the TVA, creating fictitious stories of the Time-Keepers, so called beings who brought peace to the Sacred Timeline by ensuring that it flows in one linear fashion.

Loki's arrest[edit | edit source]

As part of a branch in the Sacred Timeline created by the failure of the Avengers in retrieving the Space Stone from 2012, a variant of Loki was created. This Variant of Loki was later put on trial for branching the timeline and sentenced to be reset; Mobius M. Mobius saw Loki as an opportunity to catch another Loki Variant named Sylvie.

He Who Remains' death[edit | edit source]

After being pruned, Loki and Sylvie went to the Citadel at the End of Time. In a fit of rage, Sylvie killed He Who Remains.

He Who Remains' death created a power vacuum in the Time Variance Authority. The Judges' Council was formed and pruning was officially ended. However, the resulting surviving branches created systematic instability within the Temporal Loom. General Dox recruited several TVA agents to prune the branches, killing millions of people. The reduced branches allowed Casey to locate Ravonna Renslayer, a judge who allied with Miss Minutes.

Renslayer and Miss Minutes went to the 1800s to give Victor Timely a copy of the Time Variance Authority Official Handbook. In the resulting branching timeline, Timely became a noted inventor. Mobius and Loki located Timely and took him to the Time Variance Authority headquarters to use his aura to fix the Temporal Loom. However, he died attempting to make it to the loom.
