Johann Schmidt, also known as Red Skull, is the former head of Hydra and the former stonekeeper of the Soul Stone.
Schmidt led Hydra while it was a division of the Nazi Schutzstaffel, and became an ally of Adolf Hitler. Schmidt's extreme loyalty to the Nazi party and ambitions blinded him to the effects of the Super Soldier Serum, a prototype serum he took that resulted in the permanent disfigurement of his face and radicalized his beliefs. Schmidt sought out the Tesseract and retrieved it, only to be stopped by Captain America. During the battle on the Valkyrie, Schmidt was transported to Vormir and became the stonekeeper of the Soul Stone.
In 2018, during the Infinity War, Schmidt guided Thanos to the Soul Stone. Thanos sacrificed his daughter, Gamora, to retrieve the stone, freeing Schmidt of his fate.
