Marc Spector, also known by the alternate identity Steven Grant, was a former United States Marine and mercenary for the CIA. Suffering from dissociative identity disorder, Spector became the assassin Moon Knight after becoming the Avatar of the Egyptian god of the moon Khonshu.

History[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

Marc Spector was born on March 9, 1987, in Illinois, to Wendy and Elias Spector.[1][2]

One day, Spector and his brother, Randall, adventured out to a nearby cave. Spector pressured Randall to enter the cave, despite his discomfort about the weather. Randall drowned, and the incident resulted in Spector taking up the alternate identity of Steven Grant after he became estranged with his mother due to her violent tendencies.

Spector later joined the United States Marine Corps. While on a mission, Spector switched to a third, more aggressive personality, resulting in him being discharged. Facing no other choice, Spector became a mercenary.

Becoming Moon Knight[edit | edit source]

On a mission for the CIA, under the direction of Bushman, Spector worked with Bushman and Abdallah El-Faouly on an expedition to Egypt. Greed overcame Bushman, and he executed all of the archaeologists there. Spector crawled to a nearby temple and attempted to take his own life, much to the dismay of the Egyptian god of the moon, Khonshu, who convinced Spector to become an Avatar of Khonshu.

Spector later met Layla El-Faouly, Abdallah El-Faouly's daughter, and the two worked together, although eventually separated, as Spector feared Layla may become Khonshu's next Avatar.

Following Wendy's death, finding it difficult to deal with the immense grief of her death, Spector switched to Grant's identity. As Grant, Spector took a job as a gift shop employee at the National Art Gallery.

Theft of the Scarab of Ammit[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Goldfish Problem.

Grant was involved in the Theft of the Scarab of Ammit after Khonshu had used Grant's body to travel to the Alps. There, Grant traveled to a nearby town and witnessed various townspeople await to be judged by the Arthur Harrow using the Staff of Ammit. Harrow identified Grant as having Ammit's scarab, and requested that Grant hand it over. While Grant attempted to give the scarab to Harrow, Grant's hand couldn't open, resulting in a confrontation with Grant and the townspeople.

While various guards attempted to take the scarab from Grant's hand, Spector suddenly took control over Grant's body and killed them. Grant regained control over his body and attempted to flee the town in a cupcake delivery van.

Fleeing from the scene, Grant was chased by a group of cars who attempted to assassinate Grant. Following the altercation, Grant awoke in his bed.

After waking up, Grant had shown up as part of his date with co-worker Dylan, only to discover that the date had occurred two days prior.

Grant had discovered various calls made to a phone in his apartment to Layla, who had assumed Grant was Spector. After Spector confronted Grant, Grant had felt rumbling and was chased by Khonshu in his apartment.

The following day, Grant believed he was being followed; in fact, Harrow was following Grant into the museum, and had recruited Ronnie as part of his campaign.

Harrow explained the Ennead Ammit's purpose and intentions to Grant and attempted to recruit Grant.

Ambush on Steven Grant[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Goldfish Problem.

That night, Grant was serving night shift, and believed he was being followed. While checking a corridor, Grant had seen the shadow of a large creature and hid behind an exhibit. Harrow offered Grant an ultimatum to either give the scarab or die. Grant held on to the scarab and was ambushed by the creature.

Frantically, Grant ran into a locked bathroom and hid. Spector asked Grant to give control of his body to Spector; Grant declined, believing that what he was seeing wasn't real. Grant reluctantly gave control to Spector and had reemerged as Moon Knight.

Meeting Khonshu[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Summon the Suit.

Grant woke up in his bed again, remembering the encounter, and had requested J.B. review the security footage that day. J.B. agreed, but found nothing on the footage.

The same day, Grant was fired from his job at the museum due to the ambush. Grant later visited a storage locker in search of proof that he isn't mad. Spector confronted Grant in the locker and asked for him to give the body again; Grant refused and attempted to escape the locker. Khonshu appeared in front of Grant and asked for Grant to give the body back.

Leaving the facility, Layla showed up to rescue Grant, believing him as Spector. Layla took Grant to his apartment and became increasingly more frustrated with Grant.

Kidnapping of Steven Grant[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Summon the Suit.

While at Grant's apartment, Layla and Grant heard a knock at the door from two detective constables, DC Kennedy and DC Fitzgerald. The two investigated Grant's apartment and kidnapped Grant under the direction of Harrow. After reaching Harrow's neighborhood, Harrow unhandcuffed Grant and explained himself and his perspective on Khonshu.

While Harrow and Grant discussed the scarab over dinner, Layla had interrupted them and had attempted to escape with Grant. Layla attempted to explain to Grant that he was Spector and that he had to "summon the suit". Grant had instead summoned a suit, not knowing the suit was intended to be the ceremonial armor from Khonshu's temple. Grant attempted to fight an invisible jackal as Mr. Knight. After defeating the jackal, Grant surrendered control to Spector.

Following the defeat of Grant and Layla, Grant, now serving as a bystander to Spector, confronted Spector. Interrupting their argument, Khonshu gave Spector instructions to head to Egypt.

Heading to Egypt[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Friendly Type.

In search of Harrow and the scarab, Spector headed to Egypt and fought various disciples of Ammit.

After losing a lead on Harrow, Khonshu had called for a meeting of the Ennead to hold Harrow accountable for attempting to release Ammit. Harrow was called upon to testify, successfully convincing the Enneads that Khonshu had searched for Ammit's tomb and had possessed various personalities, torturing them. Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of music and love, informed Khonshu that a medjay, Senfu, has knowledge on the location of Ammit's tomb.

Searching for Senfu[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Friendly Type.

Spector, after learning of Hathor's knowledge, searched for Senfu's sarcophagus, to no avail. Spector then enlisted the help of Layla, who arranged a meeting with the collector Anton Mogart.

Unaware of how to interpret the tomb, Spector reluctantly allowed Grant to decode the sarcophagus. As Spector tampered with the sarcophagus, Mogart's men turned on Spector as they held Layla and Spector at gunpoint.

After learning of Senfu's location, Harrow headed to Mogart's estate to destroy the sarcophagus and began a battle at Anton Mogart's estate. Khonshu then called upon Spector to do something, to which Spector then summoned the suit and began killing Mogart's men. Grant, seeing Spector go on a murder spree, then took back control of his body as Mr. Knight and had attempted to resolve the situation diplomatically, to little success. Spector then took back control of the body after Grant was stabbed.

Layla and Spector then headed to the desert to recover the various pieces from Senfu's sarcophagus. Spector let Grant look at the pieces and had seen a constellation from the pieces. Seeing the constellations as a potential map to the location of Ammit's tomb, Khonshu turned back the constellations with Mr. Knight to attempt to find the tomb. Layla then found the coordinates, but due to Khonshu's disobedience, the Ennead imprisoned Khonshu in an ushabti prison.

Finding the tomb[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Tomb.

Layla and Grant headed to the coordinates to search for the tomb. While searching, the two encountered a creature disemboweling a human. Grant, fleeing, discovered the tomb and his ushabti. Layla then confronted Grant about Abdallah El-Faouly, her father, and Marc's role in his death. Spector then took control of Grant's body, and Layla and Spector were ambushed by Harrow's men.

Facing no other option, Spector killed two of his men, but was himself shot twice by Harrow and sunk into water.

Waking up[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Tomb.

Spector awoke in a psychiatric hospital, met with various people and objects from his adventure. Harrow attempted to gaslight Spector into believing that he was delusional. Triggered by the various objects in Harrow's office, Spector attempted to flee the facility and hid in a room with a sarcophagus. Spector discovered Grant in the sarcophagus, and the two were met by the Egyptian goddess Taweret.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Marc Spector exhibits dissociative identity disorder, a mental disorder causing Spector to have three split personalities: Spector, Steven Grant, and a third identity.

As Spector, trained as a mercenary, Spector is portrayed as morally adamant, stern, and untactful, suffering from anger issues and burdened by his executions.

As Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, Grant is portrayed as feeble and weak, choosing to be diplomatic. Like Spector, Grant is lonely, and frequently talks to a street performer about his life.

Spector possesses a third identity; similar to Spector, this third identity is brutal, however, doesn't pertain to Spector's moral code.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Marc Spector is a trained mercenary for the CIA; as such, Spector is skillful in hand-to-hand combat, using knives in combat, and is an expert marksman.

While Steven Grant possess no skills in being an assassin, Grant has a vast knowledge on Egyptian artifacts and their historical context.

As an Avatar of Khonshu, while using Khonshu's ceremonial armor, Spector has enhanced capabilities, such as superhuman strength and agility.
