Karl Amadeus Mordo is a former Master of the Mystic Arts. Mordo worked closely with the Ancient One, recruiting sorcerers to Kamar-Taj on her behalf.
In 2016, during the attack on the Sanctums, Mordo convinced the Ancient One to take in Stephen Strange, an esteemed neurosurgeon who had lost the use of their hands in a car accident. Mordo and Strange fought side-by-side against the Zealots until Strange used the Time Stone to stop Dormammu from conquering Earth, an act Mordo found an extreme violation of the natural law. Mordo's piety led him to begin a plan to strip "unworthy" sorcerers of their powers.
