Xu Shang-Chi,[notes 1] also known by the alias Shaun, is the son of Xu Wenwu, the founder of the Ten Rings.

Shang-Chi was raised as a formidable martial artist and underwent grueling training under Wenwu, with his training culminating in the assassination of the Iron Gang leader, an act that caused him to flee China and move to San Francisco, changing his name to Shaun in the process.

By 2024, Shang-Chi had taken up the job as a valet worker. Shang-Chi's life was upended when he was attacked on a bus, exposing his history to Katy Chen, his best friend. Chen and Shang-Chi then embarked on a mission to put an end to Wenwu's plan to bring Shang-Chi's mother back to life, by opening the Dark Gate.
